Greensboro, N.C. – Ten more GCS elementary schools will receive new safety vestibules. At its meeting Tuesday, the Board of Education approved deferred capital replacement bond funds in the amount of $1,399,000.

Improvements will take place at the following schools: Bessemer Elementary, Cone Elementary, Fairview Elementary, Gibsonville Elementary, Gillespie Park Elementary, Joyner Elementary, Murphey Academy, Nathanael Greene Elementary, Northwood Elementary and Wiley Elementary. Both Murphey and Wiley closed in 2023 but will continue to be used as swing space for schools under construction.

The security vestibules will be built onto the existing school entryways and will include a second set of walls and doors to access the main buildings, with doorways that lead directly into the main office, creating multiple security checks to gain entry into the school. Each will have electronic door releases with intercoms and cameras.

The work will take place outside of school hours and should be completed before the start of the next school year. In February, the board approved funds for similar work to take place at eight High Point Elementary schools.
