Dr. Tyron McMillon

Greetings Bessemer Bobcat Families,

It is with great pride and gratitude that I introduce myself as the new principal of Bessemer Elementary School. I am truly honored to lead a school with such a rich history and strong sense of community. I am excited to partner with our students, families, and dedicated staff as we work together to ensure that every child reaches their highest potential—academically, socially, and emotionally.

My philosophy is rooted in the belief that all students are capable of success when effective systems, high-quality instruction, and caring relationships support them. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, where I faced many challenges, including poverty and the incarceration of my father. These experiences shaped my deep commitment to equity and the importance of education as a pathway to opportunity.

After high school, I proudly served nine years in the United States Army, where I developed leadership skills and a dedication to service. My passion for education emerged during my time as a correctional officer, where I witnessed firsthand how the lack of positive role models and educational support impacted youth. I became determined to make a difference before children reached that point.

Research continues to affirm what I believe to my core—that strong relationships between students and educators are key to student engagement and achievement. At Bessemer, I am committed to fostering a nurturing, inclusive, and high-expectation environment for all learners.

I look forward to an incredible year of teaching, learning, and growing together. I am eager to meet each of you and work side by side to advocate for our children and community.

With Bobcat Pride,
Dr. Tyron McMillon

We have two incredible children—our son Kendall, 20, who is currently attending North Carolina A&T State University, majoring in Civil Engineering, and our daughter Kadence, 16, a rising 11th grader. Our family was also blessed with a beloved Black Lab named Muffin, who was with us for 11 wonderful years before passing away in June of 2024. Muffin brought our family immense joy, love, and comfort, and her memory continues to live on in our hearts.
